Co-owner of Duvall & Co Shares Her Journey of Redecorating Her Craftsman Home

An insight into the making of the Duvall dream home

When the Duvalls purchased their craftsman home in Wake Forest 12 years ago, they undertook the mammoth yet exciting task of transforming it into the home of their dreams. This inspired the founding of Duvall & Co - a fine furniture maker and shop. Dani Duvall’s journey in redecorating her outdated craftsman home was captured in an interview in Home Design & Decor magazine. The article shares below several crucial design elements in Dani’s house that can be a source of inspiration for homeowners who are looking to create their dream homes.

  1. Different spaces, different moods: Dani incorporated different styles into different areas of the house. She infused the kitchen, patio, dining room, and sunroom with varying moods using one-of-a-kind items keeping in mind the aesthetic as well as the functional appeal of each space. The kitchen was designed to be warm and welcoming. The sunroom has a Mediterranean vibe with its imported authentic terracotta floor tiles. Every space was thoughtfully designed to be unique and intriguing.
  2. Customized furniture: Disappointed with the cheap and mass-produced furniture available in the market, Dani set out to curate a ten-foot modern wooden dining table with a white quartz top. Removing the traditional island, she created a beautiful space in the kitchen where she could prepare the food, do homework, sip a glass of wine, and entertain her guests. The most-used space in the house was designed to be inviting while serving multiple purposes.

The wow moment

Dani said. “I chose three large rattan pendants to go above the table. This natural material brings the outdoors inside and gives the whole room such a fun and warm vibe for entertaining.”

  1. Something old, something new: Dani inherited a collection of antiques and art pieces from her mother. She lovingly displayed the unique pieces across the house to create modern, midcentury, transitional, and eclectic styles in different corners. To create an authentic and unique space, Dani believes that a mix of old and new elements across the house works beautifully.
  2. Budget and high-end mix: Dani found it made sense to start with a budget and divide it into non-negotiable (or splurge items) and items on which she could save money. She felt that for an elevated look and feel in a home, higher-end items must be a part of the mix.
  3. Cultural and artistic influences: Growing up in Old San Juan along with her overseas travels made a huge impact on Dani’s aesthetic preferences. Inspired by historical architecture, various elements can be seen dotted across her home to showcase the cultural and artistic influences.
  4. Personal style: Dani’s Wake Forest home is a combination of natural elements and interesting textures presented in a neutral and calming palette. From warm wood tones, rattan, and black-and-white accents to cozy terracotta floors and eclectic Turkish rugs, the Duvall home exudes its owners' personality and aesthetics.

Pro advice:

“Think about the process of developing your own style as a long-term process,” Dani advises. “Instagram and Pinterest are honestly great resources for you to really start understanding what your likes and dislikes are, so start pinning and saving interiors you gravitate toward. Over time, as you look back at your collection, you will see unifying themes that will build a better understanding of your aesthetic, and that will be the foundation of your vision.”
